Ajwa vs Medjool Dates: How They Differ and How to Choose

A source-based comparison of Ajwa and Medjool dates: appearance, nutrition data, price position, uses and significance, with a simple guide to choosing by purpose.

Quick Answer

Ajwa and Medjool are different date varieties with different strengths. Ajwa is associated with Madinah, holds religious significance for many Muslims and is among the most expensive dates. Medjool is a large, soft, widely available date with well-documented USDA nutrition data. No head-to-head human study shows one is healthier, so the better choice depends on your purpose and budget.

Editorial Note

Composition differs by source, season, ripeness and growing region, so these numbers are indicators, not guarantees.

Nutrition: What We Can and Cannot Say

Both are dates, so both are energy-dense and rich in natural sugars. Because Ajwa has no USDA reference entry we could verify, a fair per-100 g comparison is not yet possible from authoritative data. Academic studies have analysed Ajwa flesh and pits, but methods and samples differ, so we do not rank the two on nutrition.

No Verified Ajwa-Specific USDA Entry Found

Nutrition tables for Ajwa come from academic studies rather than a standard USDA reference. Values should be treated as indicative, not label-accurate.

Important Caution

Be cautious about claims that Ajwa is “far richer” in antioxidants than Medjool. We have not found a human trial comparing them.

Religious Significance

Editorial Note

Ajwa is named in authentic hadith, including those collected in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Medjool is not named in these narrations. For references and what they do and do not say, see Ajwa dates in Islam.

How to Choose

This is editorial guidance, not research.

Your priority Likely better fit
Following the Sunnah regarding Ajwa Ajwa
Budget or everyday snacking Medjool, because it is widely available (check current prices)
Baking or blending into smoothies Either; choose by texture and price

Are Ajwa Dates the Healthiest?

No variety is established as the healthiest date. The answer depends on what you are comparing — sugar, fibre, minerals, taste, texture, price, or how you plan to eat them — and on the person’s own dietary needs.

Direct lab comparison is also limited: Medjool has a USDA FoodData Central entry (FDC ID 168191), while Ajwa has no USDA entry, so there is no official side-by-side nutrient table for the two. Both are energy-dense and high in natural sugars, as dates generally are. Choose on taste, texture, budget and tradition rather than on a “healthiest” label. For the full range of varieties, see types of dates.
