How to Buy Ajwa Dates: A Checklist for Choosing a Reliable Seller
What to look for on the label, which questions to ask a seller, how to compare prices fairly per 100 g, and how to store dates after buying.
Buy Ajwa dates from a seller who states the variety, growing region, harvest or packing date and net weight, and who can answer questions about origin. Compare prices per 100 g, not per box. Be cautious of unusually low prices and unclear labels. Appearance alone cannot reliably confirm that dates are genuine Ajwa.
What Genuine Ajwa Looks Like
A review of Ajwa describes the fruit as medium in size, ovoid-elongated, dark and soft yet dry. Ajwa is traditionally associated with Madinah and its adjoining areas.
Treat this as a description, not a test. Colour and texture change with ripeness, drying and storage, and sellers can describe or present other dates similarly. Rely on documentation and seller credibility more than on looks.
Questions to Ask the Seller
- Which variety is this, and where was it grown (region or farm)?
- When was it harvested or packed?
- Are the dates sold with or without pits, and is anything added?
- What is the net weight, and does it include the box?
- How have they been stored, and how should I store them?
- What is the return or refund policy if the dates are not as described?
If a seller cannot or will not answer, that is information in itself.
Read the Label
- Variety and origin stated clearly (not just “premium dates”)
- Net weight in grams or kilograms
- Ingredients: for plain dates, dates only
- Best-before or packing date, and the supplier’s contact details
Grading and size names such as “jumbo” or “premium” are not standardised across sellers, so ask what they mean.
Compare Prices Fairly
Price per box is misleading because boxes differ in weight.
Compare only like with like: the same weight basis, pitted or unpitted, and whether the price is retail or wholesale.
We do not list prices on this page because they change, and unusually low prices relative to the market are a common sign of mislabelled or substituted dates. See our Ajwa price guide and price in Saudi Arabia for dated information, and why Ajwa dates are expensive.
Buying in Specific Places
Availability and sellers differ by location. See the local guides below.
Storing Dates After You Buy
Store dates in an airtight container, away from heat and moisture. For commodity-specific temperature guidance by cultivar, UC Davis Postharvest provides advice for dates, and freezer storage is commonly used for long-term keeping. Always follow the packaging label for opened products.
If You Are Buying for Religious Reasons
Narrations about Ajwa are discussed in Ajwa dates in Islam. Whether origin matters for the practice is a question for a qualified scholar; the texts themselves do not settle it. Compare options with Ajwa vs Medjool.
