Ajwa vs Safawi Dates: Which Should You Choose?
Two Saudi dates compared: what research reports about Safawi, how it relates to Ajwa, where evidence is missing, and how to choose.
Ajwa and Safawi are both Saudi dates, and they are not interchangeable. Ajwa has religious significance because it is named in hadith, and we found no narration naming Safawi. Beyond that, direct comparison data is thin. One lab study found Safawi had the highest phenolic content among the Saudi varieties it tested, which is a lab measurement, not a proven health benefit.
What the Research Reports About Safawi
- Phenolics: a 2024 study in Molecules analysed Saudi date varieties at the Tamr (fully ripe) stage and found Safawi had the highest concentration of phenolic compounds among the varieties tested (1132 µg/100 g dry weight). Whether Ajwa was among the varieties compared is not confirmed here; the reviewer should check the full text.
- Moisture: in a study of Safawi, Sukkary and Medjool, Safawi had lower moisture than Sukkary and Medjool, and all three were classed as semi-soft.
- Size: Medjool had higher fruit and flesh weights than Safawi in that study.
What the Research Reports About Ajwa
One analysis of Ajwa flesh reported 22.8% moisture; Ajwa is described as medium-sized, dark and soft yet dry. See Ajwa vs Medjool for other composition data.
Side by Side
| Ajwa | Safawi | |
|---|---|---|
| Named in hadith | Yes (Bukhari, Muslim) | No narration found in sources checked |
| Phenolic content in lab study | Not confirmed in the same study | Highest among varieties tested in one study |
| Moisture | 22.8% (one study) | Lower than Sukkary and Medjool in one study |
| Verified USDA entry | No | No |
| Glycaemic index | Not verified | Not verified |
| Price | Described as among the most expensive dates | Not verified; check current prices |
What This Means
A higher phenolic reading in one study does not show that Safawi is better for health. Phenolic levels vary with growing conditions and ripeness, and no human study compares the two.
How to Choose
- For the religious practice: Ajwa. See Ajwa dates in Islam.
- For everyday eating: compare texture and price per 100 g; see how to buy Ajwa dates.
- If you manage blood sugar: neither has verified glycaemic data here. See Ajwa dates and diabetes.
