Dates With Milk: What We Know About the Combination
Dates and milk are eaten together across many cultures. Here’s a clear look at what each brings nutritionally, and the one point – iron absorption – that actually has research behind it.
Dates and milk are a common pairing, but we found no rigorous studies of the combination itself. Nutritionally, dates add sugar and fibre and milk adds protein, calcium and its own calories. One point with evidence behind it: calcium can reduce absorption of non-haem iron, the type found in plant foods.
What Each Brings
- Dates: USDA reference for Medjool is 277 kcal and 66.5 g sugars per 100 g, with 6.7 g fibre.
- Milk: a source of protein and calcium. About 300 mg of calcium is cited for a cup of milk, per the USDA.
The combination is a food, not a treatment, and its health effects follow from what and how much you eat.
The Iron and Calcium Question
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that calcium, tannins, polyphenols and phytates can decrease absorption of non-haem iron. A review in Nutrition Research Reviews found that dairy products and calcium supplements inhibited both haem and non-haem iron absorption in single-meal studies. It also concluded the effect on iron balance is unlikely to matter in Western societies unless calcium intake is habitually very low, and that dairy products had a variable effect.
If you rely on dates for iron, or take iron supplements, eat them apart from milk. For most people the effect is small. Ask your doctor if you have anaemia.
Who Should Be Careful
- Lactose intolerance or milk allergy: choose a milk alternative.
- Diabetes or watching sugar: the dates still add sugar. See Ajwa dates and diabetes.
- Weight: both add calories; see weight loss.

Common Questions
Is dates with milk good for you?
It can be part of a balanced diet. Claims about sleep, bones or stamina are not supported by studies we found.
Does milk reduce the iron in dates?
It may reduce absorption of the non-haem iron they contain, though the effect varies and is small in mixed meals.
